Community Relations Education We place a very high value on community involvement, believing that an investment in communities where we have facilities supports both our strategic business goals and our responsibility as a good corporate citizen and neighbor. Through donations of money, volunteer time and materials, we strive to make our community a better place in which to live and work. Our support extends to a variety of educational, cultural, civic, health and human service organizations in our business locations. Beyond our cash donations, which exceed $1 million annually, Newport News employees contribute more than $2 million in additional in-kind contributions each year and support a wide variety of programs. Community Service Our support for civic and community activities continues to grow each year and encompasses a variety of local, regional and national organizations. While we make substantial cash and in-kind contributions, hundreds of our employees have also volunteered their time to a number of organizations through our Volunteer Opportunity Listing, a monthly publication used to coordinate volunteer projects around the company. Some examples include: Each year many of our employees participate in neighborhood clean up projects for Earth Day. Newport News volunteers support the United Ways Day of Caring by donating their time and efforts to local community improvement projects such as building a sturdy deck for the local YMCA. Health & Human Services We support a variety of health and human services organizations through our Corporate Contributions Program. As an example, working with the United Way, employees, retirees and the company have in recent years donated nearly $1.5 million to 51 different agencies. The American Red Cross collects almost 1,200 units of blood each year during our monthly blood drives around the Company. Our many generous employees extend the holiday spirit to those less fortunate through an annual Special Holiday Food Drive, collecting thousands of pounds of food each year for the Peninsula Foodbank. Arts & Culture Situated in the heart of Hampton Roads, near the Atlantic Ocean and Williamsburg, VA, we are surrounded by opportunities to experience critically important American and maritime history. Dance, music, visual arts, and museums that celebrate our history, the natural world and the future are also an important part of our daily lives. Our employees devote many hours of enthusiasm, creativity and time in support of artistic and cultural groups in our communities. We provide support with financial and in-kind contributions to such organizations as the Virginia Living Museum, the Mariners Museum, the Virginia Symphony, Virginia Stage Company, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, the Virginia Air and Space Museum, and WHRO Public Radio and Television.
