January 9, 1997, NEWPORT NEWS, Va.-- Patrick A. Tucker has
been named Vice President of Government Relations for America's largest
shipbuilding company, Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS).
Tucker, 49, is responsible for the company's relations with local,
state and federal governments.
"Pat's role in dealing with the diverse requirements of our largest
customer, the U. S. Government, is very important to us," said Newport
News Shipbuilding President and Chief Executive Officer William P. Fricks.
"And he is especially well-qualified having worked effectively within
the government, as well as with the government, for approximately 25

Tucker previously served as Executive Director of Government Relations
for Tenneco, Inc., the former parent company of Newport News Shipbuilding.
The shipbuilding division was spun off from Tenneco on December 10,
1996, to become an independent, publicly-traded company. Tucker had
been responsible for directing all of Tenneco's government relations
activities with the Congress and federal agencies. Prior to becoming
executive director, he was responsible for representing Tenneco in its
dealings with the federal government on issues of shipbuilding, health,
safety, labor and taxation. Before joining Tenneco in 1994, Tucker was
Counsel to U. S. Senator John Warner from 1993 to 1994. He had served
as Minority Staff Director and Counsel to the Senate Armed Services
Committee and in a variety of other senior positions on the Senate committee
staff from 1983 to 1993.
Tucker is a native of Beckley, West Virginia, and earned his bachelor's
degree in Public Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute
in 1969. He graduated with honors from the George Washington University
law school in 1972; served on active duty in the U. S. Air Force from
1972 to 1980; and was a civilian attorney advising the Air Force headquarters
on legislative matters from 1980 to 1983.
Newport News Shipbuilding has produced approximately 800 ships during
its 110 years of operations -- including Navy aircraft carriers, submarines
and cruisers. It is currently building the nuclear-powered aircraft
carriers HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75) and RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76) and has
begun work in preparation for construction of the Navy's New Attack
Submarine.
The company's 1995 revenues totaled $1.8 billion, with income of
$157 million. It has a current backlog of orders totaling approximately
$3.5 billion. Its workforce numbers 18,000, making it Virginia's largest
