 STEVE HASSELL APPOINTED CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER AT NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., February 12, 1998 – Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE:NNS) has appointed Steve Hassell to the position of Chief Information Officer. As CIO, he is responsible for all aspects of information technology at the company, including the implementation of a Shared Data Environment, data center operations, network infrastructure and information technology strategy.

Hassell joined Newport News Shipbuilding in 1995. Prior to his appointment to CIO, he served as Director, Process Innovation, where he directed the development and execution of a strategy to replace many of the company’s computer systems with a series of commercial software packages.

He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and holds a master’s degree in Management from the J. L. Kellogg School of Graduate Management at Northwestern University in Michigan. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy completing tours of duty in both engineering and combat systems on the destroyer USS John Young (DD-973).
