NEWPORT NEWS, Va., April 2, 1998
– One of the world’s largest cruise ships, the Carnival Destiny, arrived this week at Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS) for a nine-day period of work.

Owned and operated by Carnival Cruise Lines based in Miami, Fla., the Carnival Destiny is in dry dock at the company to undergo work to include underwater hull blasting and coating; inboard and outboard stern tube seal replacement; port and starboard main propeller blade removals and inspection of three bow thrusters and three stern thrusters and overhaul of sea valves.

The 101,000-ton ship, which is 893 feet in length and has a beam of 116 feet, has been in service for one year. This is its first dry docking and Newport News Shipbuilding is the only U. S. shipyard with a dry dock large enough to accommodate the vessel. Carnival Destiny has a guest capacity of 2,642 people and travels to the eastern and western Caribbean islands.

Newport News Shipbuilding is America’s premier shipbuilding company with annual revenues of approximately $1.7 billion and 18,000 employees. The company is the leader in the design and construction of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the U. S. Navy.
