NEWPORT NEWS, Va., April 2, 1998 – One of the world’s largest cruise
ships, the Carnival Destiny, arrived this week at Newport News
Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS) for a nine-day period of work.
Owned and operated by Carnival Cruise
Lines based in Miami, Fla., the Carnival Destiny is in dry dock
at the company to undergo work to include underwater hull blasting and
coating; inboard and outboard stern tube seal replacement; port and
starboard main propeller blade removals and inspection of three bow
thrusters and three stern thrusters and overhaul of sea valves.
The 101,000-ton ship, which is 893 feet
in length and has a beam of 116 feet, has been in service for one year.
This is its first dry docking and Newport News Shipbuilding is the only
U. S. shipyard with a dry dock large enough to accommodate the vessel.
Carnival Destiny has a guest capacity of 2,642 people and travels
to the eastern and western Caribbean islands.
