NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING APPOINTS
ESHELMAN, WEAVER AND WINGFIELD TO VICE PRESIDENT
NEWPORT NEWS,
Va., August 3, 1998 – Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS),
America’s largest ship design and construction company, announced today
the appointments of Roger Eshelman, Bill Weaver and Chuck Wingfield
to vice president and corporate officer. The company named Eshelman
Vice President of Nuclear Engineering, Weaver as Vice President of Planning
and Facilities and Wingfield as Vice President and Controller.
"The promotions of Roger, Bill and Chuck
will enable stronger functional support for their respective programs
and will help us in our goal to ensure continuous improvement in our
organization," said NNS Chairman and CEO Bill Fricks.
Roger Eshelman, age 59, will be responsible
for all the functions of Nuclear Engineering at NNS to include developing
the next-generation nuclear plant for the future carrier, CVX. He began
his career with the company in 1961 as a designer of engine rooms for
nuclear-powered surface ships and submarines. Assignments during his
tenure at Newport News have included Project Manager of Advanced Technology
Applications; Director, Naval Engineering; and Chief Engineer, Naval
Engineering. Eshelman has a B. S. in Mechanical Engineering from the
University of Pittsburgh and a M.S. in Thermal Engineering from Old
Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. In 1994 Eshelman was named "Virginia
Peninsula Engineer of the Year" by the Peninsula Engineers Council.
As Vice President of Planning and Facilities,
Bill Weaver, age 52, will be responsible for the direction of the overall
central planning functions of the company to include Production Engineering,
Production Resource Planning and Capacity Planning. He will also direct
the Facilities function. Weaver started with the company in 1967 in
the Machinery Design department. He has previously served as Manager
of the Trades Program; Manager of Organization Planning and Development;
Director of Human Resources; and Director of Production and Resource
Planning. Weaver is a graduate of Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.
with a B.S. in Economics.
Chuck Wingfield, age 45, joined Newport
News Shipbuilding in 1980 as a Resource Analyst in Corporate Strategy.
In his new position of Vice President and Controller, he will be responsible
for operations finance, financial reporting, general accounting, tax
and government liaison activities. He has held various positions in
the financial areas of the company, including Controller; Treasurer;
Director of Financial Planning; and Director of Operations Finance.
Wingfield received his B.S. degree in Commerce from the University of
Virginia and a M.B.A. from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg,
Va.
Both Eshelman and Weaver report to Tom
Schievelbein, NNS Executive Vice President for Operations. Wingfield
reports to Dave Anderson, NNS Senior Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer.
