NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING PROMOTES SIX EMPLOYEES TO DIRECTORS

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., November 18, 1998 – Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS) announced today the recent promotion of six employees to director positions within the organization.

Jennifer Boykin, who joined the company in 1987, has been appointed Director of Facilities. She is responsible for the facilities engineering, construction and the maintenance of company buildings, equipment and service throughout the 550-acre facility in Virginia. Before this appointment she was Construction Superintendent for Aircraft Carriers. Boykin lives in Suffolk, Va.

Greg Corey, who joined the company in 1987, has been promoted to Director and Assistant Controller. His most recent position was Assistant Controller. His responsibilities include financial reporting, general accounting, tax and government liaison functions. Corey lives in Newport News, Va.

John Lilley, an NNS employee since 1996, has been promoted to Director of Carrier Overhauls. In this position Lilley leads the effort to plan and conduct overhauls of aircraft carriers at Newport News Shipbuilding. He was previously Construction/Program Manager for the USS Nimitz overhaul and refueling work.

Previous to joining NNS Lilley was the Defense and Foreign Policy Legislative Assistant for Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut. He lives in Williamsburg, Va.

A 26-year veteran of NNS Harold Paxton has been appointed to Director, Carrier Construction. Paxton has responsibility for all carrier construction activities to include ship progress, schedules and performance. Prior to his promotion Paxton was a Construction Manager for Aircraft Carriers. He lives in Williamsburg, Va.

A former commanding officer of the USS Forrestal (CV 59), Tim Thomassy has been promoted to Director of Business Development. In this position he is responsible for identifying and evaluating potential new business opportunities for Newport News Shipbuilding. He also is responsible for providing aircraft carrier and submarine engineering design and analysis support to the U. S. Navy customer and for representing NNS with the Navy and other Department of Defense customers. With Newport News since March 1998, Thomassy’s prior position with the company was as Manager of Marketing for the NNS office in Arlington, Va. Prior to that he worked for Boeing/McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, Mo. Thomassy lives in Alexandria, Va.

A resident of Isle of Wight County, Va., Mike Wynn has been appointed Director of CVN New Construction/Design at Newport News Shipbuilding. He is responsible for the non-nuclear design of the Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), as well as CVN 77 and future aircraft carriers. Wynn has been with the company since 1970 and his most recent position was as an Engineering Manager.

Newport News Shipbuilding designs and constructs nuclear powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy and provides life-cycle maintenance services for ships in the Navy fleet. The company employs 18,000 people and has annual revenues of approximately $1.8 billion.
