NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING REDELIVERS USS CARON (DD 970) ON SCHEDULE

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Monday, June 7, 1999 – Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE:NNS) announced today that it had redelivered the destroyer USS Caron (DD 970) to the U.S. Navy after successfully completing overhaul and modernization of the ship. The redelivery was Friday, June 4.

The company was awarded the competitively bid contract in January 1999 and the ship arrived later that same month.

Work performed included hull preservation and painting; inspection replacement and repair of main propulsion shafting and machinery space equipment; installation and testing of the ship’s new generators; combat systems repairs; and modernization of berthing spaces to accommodate female officers and crew.

Commissioned in 1977, the Caron is named after Hospital Corpsman Third Class Wayne Maurice Caron. Petty Officer Caron was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for service in Vietnam.
