NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING RECEIVES AWARD FROM FOODBANK OF THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA NEWPORT NEWS, Va., June 16, 1999 – Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS) reported today that it has received the Golden Can Award presented by the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula. The award was presented to NNS at the Foodbank’s 1999 Volunteer Recognition Awards ceremony held June 3. The Golden Can Award is for individuals or organizations that have been instrumental in assisting with the Foodbank’s canned food drives. In 1998, during its annual Holiday Food Drive, Newport News Shipbuilding collected more than 11,000 pounds of food, the most from any one corporation on the Peninsula. Since 1996, NNS employees have donated approximately 16 tons of food to the Foodbank. Barbara Mocnik, the Foodbank’s executive director said, "Shipyard employees definitely made a big difference to a lot of people during the holidays and the Foodbank wanted to thank them for their efforts." Newport News Shipbuilding designs and constructs nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy and provides life-cycle services for ships in the Navy fleet.
