RICK SPAULDING APPOINTED TO DIRECTOR OF CENTRAL PLANNING AT NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., May 8, 2000 – Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS) announced today the appointment of Rick Spaulding to director of Central Planning. In this position, Spaulding is responsible for the development and management of construction, overhaul, and repair project schedules and plant repair and maintenance scheduling. Spaulding will also lead the development and implementation of the Newport News Shipbuilding Concept of Operations, an examination of principles of management and operations for the company; and the implementation of the Shared Data Environment (SDE) for Central Planning.

Spaulding began his career with NNS in 1983. He has held positions of increasing responsibility in areas to include Manufacturing, Submarine Planning, Ship Repair and Commercial Ship Construction.

A resident of Hampton, Va., Spaulding is a 1983 graduate of the University of Michigan where he earned his bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
