NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE IN POLLUTION PREVENTION BY HAMPTON ROADS SANITATION DISTRICT

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., May 19, 2000 – Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS) announced today that it has received three awards for exemplary environmental permit compliance and outstanding pollution prevention measures by the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD). The awards were presented on Thursday, May 18, 2000 at a ceremony in Virginia Beach, Va. sponsored by HRSD.

Newport News Shipbuilding won the Pollution Prevention award for the large wastewater discharger category (industries generating more than 400,000 gallons of wastewater a day). This award recognizes the company's overall pollution prevention program and its efforts to protect the area waterways and other natural resources. This award was accepted to Dawn Kriz, associate environmental engineer at NNS.

NNS also received two awards for its pretreatment programs. Pretreatment is a combination of processes that reduces or eliminates the amount and/or toxicity of pollutants that would have entered any waste stream or would have otherwise been released into the environment prior to pollution control, recycling, treatment, or disposal. The Gold Pretreatment Excellence award recognizes company efforts in the North Yard area. This award was accepted by Frank Thorn, manager, Environmental Engineering at NNS. A Silver Pretreatment Excellence award was presented honoring the company for its efforts in the Main Yard. This award was accepted by Chuck Greshman, a technician who works at one of the company's pretreatment plants.

" Pollution Prevention is very important to NNS and we are very proud and honored to receive such significant awards. This award just reaffirms the commitment of NNS to reducing or eliminating pollutants to the environment," said Frank H. Thorn, manager, Environmental Engineering at Newport News Shipbuilding, who accepted the awards on the company's behalf.
