M/V PFC JAMES ANDERSON, JR. ARRIVES
AT NNS FOR REPAIR WORK
NEWPORT NEWS, Va., July 21, 2000 – Newport News
Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS) announced that M/V
PFC James Anderson, Jr., a Military Sealift Command
(MSC) pre-positioning ship chartered by Maersk Lines,
arrived at the company today for repair work.
Work to be performed on the ship includes hull blasting
and painting; underwater equipment survey; tank blasting
and painting; overhaul of four deck cranes; survey and
repair of main propulsion equipment; repair of machinery
components; cargo equipment and helicopter deck refurbishment;
and deck equipment survey and repair. The ship is 755
feet long with a beam of 90 feet.

Pre-positioning ships like Anderson
are chartered by MSC and carry ammunition, supplies and
military vehicles. They are stationed in areas of the
world where there is a potential for conflict or requiring
rapid availability of military equipment.
Anderson will remain at the company
for approximately one month. Three sister ships to Anderson,
Bonnyman, Baugh and Phillips have
been dry docked and repaired by Newport News Shipbuilding
in the last nine months.

U.S. Navy and provides life-cycle services for ships in
