NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING AWARDED FOUR MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND SHIP REPAIR CONTRACTS

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., August 22, 2000 – Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE:NNS) announced today that it has been awarded four Military Sealift Command (MSC) pre-positioning ship repair contracts. Terms of the contracts have not been disclosed. MSC charters the ships through American Overseas Marine, based in Quincy, Ma.

Pre-positioning ships carry ammunition, supplies and military vehicles. They are stationed in areas of the world where there is a potential for conflict or requiring rapid availability of military equipment.

The ships and their scheduled arrivals are as follows: M/V 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez, October 2; M/V 1st Lt. Jack Lummus, December 11; M/V PVC Dewayne T. Williams, February 12, 2001; and M/V Sgt. William R. Button, April 16, 2001.

Work to be performed on the ships will include hull blasting and painting; underwater equipment survey; tank blasting and painting; survey and repair of main propulsion equipment; repair of machinery components; cargo equipment refurbishment; and deck equipment survey and repair.
