ALMA MARTINEZ FALLON TO BE NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AT THE FIFTH ANNUAL WOMEN OF COLOR TECHNOLOGY AWARDS CONFERENCE

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., September 5, 2000 – Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS) announced that Alma Martinez Fallon, manager of Planning and Manufacturing Engineering for Steel Fabrication, has been selected as one of America’s leading minority women in technology fields by Hispanic Engineer and US Black Engineer and Information Technology magazines. She will be recognized for her achievements at the Fifth Annual Women of Color Technology Awards Conference, September 28, 2000, in Atlanta, Ga.

Martinez Fallon joined the company in 1988 as an associate engineer in the Seawolf Submarine Engineering program. In 1992 she joined the New Product Engineering division assigned to the Sealift Engineering program and in 1995 became engineering supervisor in the Aircraft Carrier Engineering division. She is active in the Hampton Roads community and serves as chair for the United Way Campaign for Newport News Shipbuilding. In 1997, Martinez Fallon was one of five national recipients of the Society of Women Engineers Distinguished New Engineer Award. In 1999, she was the recipient of the Peninsula Engineering Council Young Engineer of the Year. She is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

Martinez Fallon is a graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., where she received her bachelor of science degree in Mechanical Engineering. She also earned a master of science degree in Engineering Management from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Martinez Fallon resides in Yorktown, Va.

She was nominated for the award by NNS Vice President of Manufacturing and Materials, John Shephard who said, "Alma has made outstanding contributions and leadership in improving planning and manufacturing processes for hull fabrication. She is an outstanding role model for young women wanting to pursue technical careers."
