NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING EMPLOYEE AWARDED 2001 SAFETY & HEALTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., September 10, 2001 – Newport News Shipbuilding (NYSE: NNS) announced today that employee Karen McCormick has been awarded the 2001 Safety & Health Achievement Award by the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association (VPPPA) for her outstanding health and safety activities.  She is among nine individuals recognized for workplace safety and health excellence during the Opening Session of the 17th Annual National VPPPA Conference held in late August in New Orleans, LA.

The VPPPA Safety & Health Achievement Award program is an opportunity for hourly employees to be recognized for their knowledge on safety and health issues and for their VPP outreach efforts within their worksite and community.  Candidates for this award spend less than 25 percent of their time on organized safety programs and initiatives and are not safety and health professionals.

McCormick’s work as a key member of the Welding department’s Lead Safety Team has been instrumental in the team winning the Safety Department Accident Investigation Award and a NNS Chairman's Model of Excellence Award, as well as being two-time recipient of the Safety Department Communication Award. She has given presentations on the need for task team communication as well as being an instructor in the Annual Safety Training Program, which is administered to hundreds of welding department mechanics.

She created a departmental eye injury reduction program that includes custom-fitting PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and ensures that replacement PPE is stocked in correct styles and quantities to fit everyone.  Within her community, she has been active in Earth Day service and the American Red Cross.

The Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), administered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Department of Energy (DOE), are a cooperative effort among labor, management and government.  Last year, Newport News Shipbuilding was re-certified at the prestigious Star level of OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). OSHA awards the Star only to those companies with comprehensive, successful safety and health programs that are in the forefront of employee protection and demonstrate continuous improvement.

Newport News Shipbuilding designs and constructs nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy and provides life-cycle services for ships in the Navy fleet. The company employs nearly 17,000 people and has annual revenues of approximately $2 billion. Visit NNS on the Web at www.nns.com
