Portsmouth, Va. - November 13, 2002 –
Tom Schievelbein, Northrop Grumman
corporate vice president and president of its Newport News sector,
kicked off the first ever Mid-Atlantic Regional Lean Conference
today. Hosted by Northrop Grumman Newport News and Old Dominion
University, this three-day event, held in Portsmouth, Va., has
attracted bankers, computer manufacturers, engineers, technology
providers, consultants, shipbuilders, academia and government
officials interested in benchmarking best practices in sustaining
and leading a "Lean" enterprise.
"The benefits of Lean are so obvious and pervasive that it
has become an operational imperative for practically all
manufacturers large and small," said Schievelbein. Newport News
employees are leading portions of the program, sharing what the
company has learned during its years of incorporating, sustaining
and advancing lean practices. "I’m inspired by the engagement
of our workforce," said Schievelbein. "I’m happy to note
that, far from losing momentum five years into lean, we have a
deeper, wider and more inspired commitment to Lean than ever
before."
