Alma
Martinez Fallon was formally installed as the 41st president
for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) during an August
8 ceremony held at the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News.
About 150 people
attended, including Northrop Grumman Newport News President
Tom Schievelbein who offered remarks during the ceremony.
He described Fallon’s honor as a well-deserved one. “I’m
pleased that Alma represents Northrop Grumman Newport News,”
he said. “She’s an example of our commitment to foster the
kind of workplace that encourages women to excel in the
engineering and technical fields. Alma has done this and
more.”
Fallon, a senior
life member of SWE, will serve in the volunteer position
for a one-year term. “I could not have achieved this milestone
without the backing and support of my company, Northrop
Grumman Newport News,” Fallon said. That support, she said,
exemplifies the strong values that exist at the company.
The Society of
Women Engineers is an educational and service organization
with more than 17,000 professionals, students and corporate
members. “As president, I am leading the society to actively
participate in the forums that define the attitudes, policies
and legislation impacting the recruitment, retention and
advancement of women in engineering,” Fallon said. “We will
also encourage future engineers by creating an array of
educational programs aimed at young girls as well as young
women in college.”
Fallon has worked
at Northrop Grumman Newport News for 15 years. She is the
manager of Planning and Manufacturing Engineering for the
Structural Fabrication and Assembly Division and is responsible
for leading an organization of engineers, planners, and
analysts.

of SWE who installed incoming officers. "I
believe that the well being of our country and continued
improvement of our quality of life, are dependent
on our edge in technology," Fallon said. "To
maintain this edge, we as leaders, owe it to ourselves
to fine the best and brightest men and women to
contribute to the engineering and technology professions."
