"Yank" Rutherford joined Northrop Grumman
Newport News as manager of Operations for the
Herbert H. Bateman Virginia Advanced Carrier and
Integration Center.

News, Va. – January 13, 2004 – Northrop Grumman Corporation
(NYSE: NOC) announced today that Lindell "Yank"
Rutherford has joined the Newport News sector as manager
of Operations for the Herbert H. Bateman Virginia Advanced
Carrier and Integration Center (VASCIC).
VASCIC, a 230,000 square foot technology and research
center, is a joint effort of the Commonwealth of Virginia,
the City of Newport News and Northrop Grumman Newport
News. The center serves as a proving ground for advanced
shipbuilding and operation technologies before they
are introduced onto ships.
Activities at VASCIC that fall under Rutherford include
aircraft carrier electronic systems integration, modeling
and simulation to enhance shipboard operations, and
integrating carrier operations into joint force activities.
Prior to joining Newport News, Rutherford served in
the U.S. Navy for 32 years, achieving the rank of rear
admiral. His most recent position was commander, Carrier
Group Four, where he trained and certified six Atlantic
Fleet Carrier Strike Groups, all of which participated
in operations Enduring Freedom or Iraqi Freedom. His
previous experience includes serving as commanding officer
of the USS George Washington and executive
officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
Rutherford earned a bachelor's degree in engineering
from the University of Missouri, Rolla. He attended
Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla.
and was commissioned in March 1972.
