Northrop Grumman Receives Environmental Award for Outstanding
Performance
SAN DIEGO
– Dec. 16, 2004 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:
NOC) has received the California Environmental
Responsibility Award from the Industrial Environmental
Association and the California Manufacturers & Technology
Association.
Continental Maritime, a subsidiary of the company's
Newport News sector, was honored for demonstrating
a commitment to environmental protection and resource
conservation.
This award signifies a perfect compliance record for
2004, and Continental Maritime was recognized as the
first shipyard in the nation to achieve a zero environmental
discharge rate.
The shipyard achieved this by eliminating all discharges,
including storm water, to the San Diego Bay. They began
the effort in 2001 by installing a collection system
to divert all runoff from the San Diego Bay. They also
re-routed steam condensate from boilers and air conditioning
units to collection tanks for sewer disposal. They
used cutting-edge technology to collect fresh water
and salt water fire main testing discharge, which is
used as fire protection for many of the U.S. Navy vessels
moored at the facility. The San Diego Regional Water
Quality Control Board has inspected the new fire protection
water discharge elimination system and confirmed that
all point source discharges have been eliminated.
“This award is a tribute to the men and women of our
shipyard,” said Dan Flood, general manager of Continental
Maritime. “Their commitment to protecting the environment
and preventing pollution is of great benefit to both
our company and the San Diego community.”
The Industrial Environmental Association was formed
in 1983 to promote responsible, cost-effective environmental
laws and regulations, facilitate environmental compliance
among member companies and provide related education
activities for the community at large.
The
California Manufacturers & Technology
Association (CMTA) works to improve and enhance a
strong business
climate for California's 30,000 manufacturing,
processing and technology-based companies. Since 1918, CMTA has worked with
state government to develop balanced laws, effective regulations and sound
public policies to stimulate economic growth and create new jobs while safeguarding
the state's environmental resources.
Located
in San Diego, Continental Maritime delivers service
and support to aircraft carriers as well as other
ships in the U.S. Navy fleet stationed
on the West Coast. Continental Maritime is a certified Master Ship Repair
Contractor
with the U.S. Navy and has accomplished hundreds of ship repair contracts
for the Navy and Military Sealift Command.
