NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – March 31, 2005 – Northrop Grumman
Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has promoted Matthew T. Needy
to director of process excellence strategy for its Newport
News sector. He is responsible for developing and aligning
a strategy across all shipbuilding programs that will
strengthen the sector’s performance by driving continuous
improvements and standardizations in all areas. He will
also serve as the Newport News executive liaison for
process improvement initiatives across the corporation.
He will report to Jennifer Boykin, vice president of
process excellence at Northrop Grumman Newport News.
“Matt’s experience, leadership, and innovative thinking
make him a great addition to the process excellence
team,” said Boykin. “He will be instrumental in the
development of the sector’s overall approach to driving
down cost and improving performance across all shipbuilding
programs and in all support areas.”
Prior to this promotion, Needy served as the manager
of systems engineering where he was responsible for
ship operational analysis, program risk management,
systems integration, technical performance management,
configuration control, and requirements management.
He has also played leadership roles in promoting integration
and sharing in the areas of systems engineering and
knowledge management across all the Northrop Grumman
sectors. He joined the Newport News sector in 1991 as
an engineer in the Seawolf submarine piping department
and has held a number of progressively responsible positions
in systems engineering and program integration.
A resident of Yorktown, Va., Needy earned a bachelor’s
degree in mechanical engineering from Clemson University.
He serves as a lay leader at Zion United Methodist Church
in Seaford, Va. He is a past president of the Hampton
Roads Chapter International Council on Systems Engineering,
and has been active in the Society of Naval Architects
and Marine Engineers, and the Project Management Institute.
