Northrop Grumman Recognized as
Facility of the Year
by the California Water Environment Association
SAN DIEGO. – March 1, 2006 –
Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) was recognized
for its commitment to protecting and preserving the environment
in San Diego.
Continental Maritime, a subsidiary of the
company's Newport News sector, was selected by the California
Water Environment Association (CWEA) as Southern California’s
Facility of the Year in the large industry category.
In an award letter to Northrop Grumman,
John Boyd, CWEA awards chairman, said the CWEA was impressed
with Continental Maritime’s knowledgeable and committed
environmental staff and its innovative process controls
to eliminate stormwater discharge and waste into the San
Diego Bay. “Organizations such as yours provide
an example of how a joint commitment by management and
employees to effective waste management yields results,”
he said.
Continental Maritime began efforts in 1997
to eliminate stormwater discharges by installing a collection
system to divert all runoff from the San Diego Bay. All
stormwater discharges were eliminated in 2001. In 2005
Continental Maritime became the nation’s first zero-discharge
shipyard by eliminating all discharges. Operating under
a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit,
Continental Maritime eliminated all point-source discharges,
including storm water, into San Diego Bay.
“We are dedicated to protecting the
environment,” said Irwin F. Edenzon, vice president
of technology development and fleet support for Northrop
Grumman Newport News and President of Continental Maritime.
“Achieving this award signifies the hard work and
commitment of our employees to reach the common goal of
a safe, clean and healthy environment.”

as other ships in the U.S. Navy fleet stationed on the
