Northrop Grumman Recognized as
Clean Business of the Year
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – March 17, 2006
– Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been
recognized as the Clean Business of the Year by the City
of Newport News’ Department of Public Works. The
company received the award for its recycling efforts in
2005.
In an award letter to Northrop Grumman,
Uganda Taylor, acting assistant recycling coordinator
of the Solid Waste Division for the city, thanked Northrop
Grumman’s Newport News sector for its “tireless
environmental stewardship activities in helping keep Newport
News beautiful.”
“As the largest industrial employer
in Virginia, we have a responsibility to our employees
and the community to protect and preserve the environment,”
said Bob Gunter, senior vice president of operations,
Northrop Grumman Newport News. “Recycling is one
example of how we can make a difference, and this award
honors our employees who have made environmental excellence
a way of life at the shipyard.”
Northrop Grumman Newport News began recycling
efforts over 100 years ago by melting and reusing scrap
steel. In 1990 the sector increased efforts to reduce
industrial waste by creating a pollution prevention program
that encouraged the recycling of metal drums, asphalt
and other materials, which decreased waste by 50 percent.
Today, Newport News recycles a variety of products such
as office paper, cardboard, respirator filters and metal,
and has averaged more than 45,000 tons of recycled and
reused material annually, for the past 10 years.
