NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Oct. 21, 2008 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has promoted William L. Hayes to trades director for the Virginia-class submarine program. He reports to Tom Cullen, director of the Virginia-class submarine program.

Hayes is primarily responsible for Virginia-class submarine production labor resource management, including resource demand forecasting and skills planning and forecasting. He is also responsible for satisfying demand needs for assembly trades which includes electricians, sheet metal workers, outside machinists, painters and insulators, pipefitters, shipfitters and welders. He will also work directly with the trades education and training organization, carrier programs and submarine fleet organization to satisfy the demands of the program.

“Willie is a strong addition to the Virginia-class submarine program,” said Cullen. “His 26 years of shipbuilding experience will enable him to successfully coordinate workforce efforts and meet program goals.”

Hayes joined Newport News in 1982 as an apprentice, graduating from the Apprentice School in 1986 as a pipefitter. Hayes has held positions of increasing responsibility such as pipefitter foreman, production controller and planner, construction supervisor, and manufacturing process leader of submarine and aircraft carrier programs. Most recently, he served as manager of shop and field operations at Newport News Industrial, a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding.
