NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Oct. 27, 2008 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has promoted Chris Vitarelli to program director of commercial nuclear programs for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding. He reports to Matt Mulherin, sector vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding’s Newport News operations.

Vitarelli oversees the newly formed commercial nuclear program, which was established in recognition of the possible resurgence of commercial nuclear power plant design, manufacturing and construction. He will be responsible for program management of the sector’s new partnership with AREVA to build reactor vessels, steam generators and pressurizers for commercial nuclear power plants.

“The decision to pursue commercial nuclear work is significant, and can be compared to the decision made in the 1950’s to move the company into the age of nuclear- powered ship construction,” said Matt Mulherin, sector vice president and general manager for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding’s Newport News operations. “Chris’ leadership, experience and enthusiasm will establish the groundwork to help position Newport News for participation in this business area.”

Vitarelli joined Newport News in 1982 as a test engineer working in submarine overhaul. Since then he’s held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility. He earned a bachelor's degree in marine engineering from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and a master’s of business administration from the College of William and Mary. He currently resides in Poquoson, Va.

Northrop Grumman Corporation is a global defense and technology company whose 120,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in information and services, electronics, aerospace and shipbuilding to government and commercial customers worldwide.
