Jimmy Carter (SSN 23)
Multi-Mission Platform Design
We are working with General Dynamics-Electric
Boat in modifying the design of the third and
final Seawolf class submarine, Jimmy
Carter, to accommodate advanced technology
for naval special warfare, tactical surveillance
and mine warfare operations. The modifications
will alter the basic Seawolf class design
in the areas of ballast control, mission-management
spaces, and various services. A unique feature
includes lengthening the hull behind the sail
by adding a "wasp waist" module that
will support multi-mission projects and enable
deployment and recovery of various payloads without
having to use torpedo tubes. Due to the modifications,
delivery of Jimmy Carter to the Navy
has been rescheduled from 2001 to 2004.
