Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States, is the
ship's sponsor for the Virginia-class submarine
Texas. She participated in the keel laying
ceremony for the ship on July 12, 2002 at Northrop Grumman
Newport News. Mrs. Bush authenticated the keel by
chalking her initials onto a metal plate. Her initials
were then permanently welded onto the plate.
