WHAT IS A SUBMARINE?

Submarine Cartoon

Submarines, also called subs, are ships that can travel either on OR under water to protect our country here at home and around the world.

At Northrop Grumman Newport News, we build all kinds of ships, including submarines. Our newest subs are the Virginia class submarines, named after the first sub in the class, the USS Virginia. Virginia class subs are the most advanced attack submarines in the world. built by a special partnership at Northrop Grumman Newport News in Virginia and General Dynamics' Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut.

It takes almost 9 Million hours of hard work by thousands of people to build a submarine, starting with complex designs and finishing with testing at port and at sea. The dedicated workers of Northrop Grumman and Electric Boat make sure that each sub is ready to take its place in protecting the United States and her allies around the world, anytime, anywhere.

So far, 3 Virginia class subs are complete and in active service: the USS Virginia (SSN 774), USS Texas (SSN 775), and USS Hawaii (SSN 776). And many more are being built right now in Newport News, Va and Groton, CT...

Did You Know?

  • Virginia class submarines can stay submerged under water for up to 3 months at a time!
  • A Virginia class sub is manned by 134 officers and crew...all in a space only 377 feet long and 34 feet wide!
  • A Virginia class sub can travel at 25+ knots! That's more than 28 miles per hour!
  • It takes 7 years to design and build a Virginia class sub

Kids can get involved in submarines too!

In 2004, a group of third and fourth grade students at the Garrison School in Dover, New Hampshire, started a letter writing campaign to their local leaders, asking that the Secretary of the Navy name the Virginia class submarine 778 the "New Hampshire" and he did!

And a high-school student from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Miss Emilee Sena, won a contest to design the logo for the SSN 779 New Mexico! Her winning artwork will be a part of the sub's uniforms, flags, and even the coffee cups the sailors use! View her logo here.
